Metcalfe imagined creating an alternative to the stereotypical dark digital media lab for Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, a private school in Philadelphia. The new lab, located across from the dining hall, integrates technology and student life, repurposing social space as a place of learning. An oversized window overlooks the adjacent hallway, inviting passing students to become interested in and involved in digital media production.
Outside of the classroom, student work is played on a continuous loop on large video display monitors and a polycarbonate ceiling projection screen. A carpeted floor beneath the projection screen invites students to lounge and discuss the work as it plays. Students can also socialize informally at large oval tables before returning to their computer work in the media lab.
