UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg partnered with UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh to create a new, cutting-edge pediatric unit within Harrisburg's existing hospital. Both institutions wanted patients and families to feel as comfortable in this single unit as they do when going to UPMC's main children's hospital. This world-class level of experience needed to be reflected in the clinical care and the built environment.
Metcalfe worked closely with Stantec and the hospital to provide patient experience consulting and design services. Our team designed environmental graphics and moments of positive distraction to create a welcoming atmosphere for patients and families.
Immediately upon entering the unit, patients and families are greeted by a vibrant and playful entry with graphics inspired by local parks and the nearby Susquehanna River.
Directly across from the entrance, patients can spot a colorful structure that houses a pair of oversized kaleidoscopes - and a surprise. The structure also features a sensory-friendly cubby into which children can enter for a moment of quiet exploration. While inside, a patient can choose to engage with a third kaleidoscope - or just enjoy the sight of the softly twinkling star-lined interior.
A toddler-friendly area offers age-appropriate features like toddler-height porthole windows and an interactive "creature builder" game with custom illustrations of animals that children can mix and match to create their own, unique creature.
A motion-sensitive wall gives visitors the chance to paint with light by just waving their arms or legs. Visitors transform a soft array of white LED lights into washes of dazzling hues with every gesture.
