Expanding on our work completed in 2015 at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Metcalfe was hired to continue the interactive and environmental designs through the remaining 6 floors of the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care.
The Center’s theme, “Children in Motion,” was carried through the extents of the building and represented in environmental graphics, wayfinding, and patient rooms to purposefully distract from the emotional weight of being in a hospital. These images were representative of a vast diversity of patients that are seen at CHOP each year, keeping in mind the diversity of cultures, range of patient ages and abilities.
Interactive experiences were sprinkled throughout each floor to provide pockets of entertainment while families were feeling anxious waiting for their appointment. From immersive experiences that one could touch, view, play individually or with a group, these elements addressed the diverse patient population while adhering to the Hospital’s in-depth infection prevention and control standards.
