Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home Visitor Center

Metcalfe was hired to master plan and create site development strategies for the 18,000 SF Chieftains Museum and Major Ridge Home Visitor Center, located on a National Historic Landmark and part of the National Park Service tour of the Trail of Tears. The proposed building would sit on a bluff overlooking the Oostanaula River and would offer commanding views of the surrounding area. It has a green roof and surrounding berms to give it the feel of being embraced by, and rising from, the earth. All elements of our designs engage visitors with the landscape, allowing them to experience the land while learning about contemporary Cherokee culture.
